“Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it; unless the Lord guards the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.”

A home must be built, but the Bible says here that human ingenuity, human wit, and human wisdom cannot build your home. There are many people who think they know exactly how to build a home. Some of them are preachers, and some of us have ideas we have gotten from ourselves and not from the Word of God. You need a divine plan. You need a blueprint. And you need a builder to build your home. And that builder and that plan is Christ and His Word, the Bible.
You can break all the laws in the Bible but one, and you’ll never break that one. It is the law of sowing and reaping. Whatever you sow, you will reap. (See Galatians 6:7.) So, think with me about the construction of the home. Jesus built the first home in the Garden of Eden. The Lord Jesus Christ is away now building your heavenly home, for He says, “I go and prepare a place for you” (John 14:3). And Jesus Christ alone can properly build your family home. Jesus is the greatest home builder, and the devil is the greatest home wrecker because the devil knows if he can hurt you at home, he has really hurt you. It doesn’t matter how pious you look and act around the Lord’s Table if you’ve just been arguing around the breakfast table. We need Christ, who is the great home builder.
Make a list of principles that are important in your home. Next to each of these, honestly assess if this is a principle that honors God and is of Him or one you have built by your own wisdom. Ask Jesus to lead you to build your home on Him.
I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.
Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
