Are You Feeling Overwhelmed?

“O my God, my soul is cast down within me; therefore I will remember You from the land of the Jordan, and from the heights of Hermon, from the Hill Mizar. Deep calls unto deep at the noise of Your waterfalls; all Your waves and billows have gone over me.”

Psalm 42:6-7

Ponder This

The River Jordan is called the river of death. Jordan means descent and judgment. It starts up on Mount Hermon. Mount Hermon towers 9,000 feet above sea level. It takes a torturous path down to the Dead Sea. The Dead Sea is 1,300 feet below sea level. And the River Jordan just flows down to the Dead Sea never to emerge again. So, in Bible typology, Jordan has been a picture of death and despair. I’ve been up the headwaters of the Jordan where the waterfalls are. And David felt like he was just being washed over by circumstances. God’s waterspouts were coming over him. He was deluged with problems, and he didn’t know where to turn. His circumstances seemed overwhelming. Maybe you feel that way today.

Don’t let Satan blow out the candle of hope. You need to look inward and analyze your heart. You need to look upward and realize your help. You need to look onward and realize your hope. God’s going to turn your Calvary into an Easter. God is going to turn every tear into a pearl. God is going to arch the rainbow of His grace over your sorrows. God will never be satisfied until he meets the deepest needs of your heart, and you will never be satisfied until your greatest desire is for Him alone.

  • Have you ever felt overwhelmed by circumstances like David? How do you respond in those moments?
  • What are some of the deepest needs of our hearts that God meets?

Front Porch Moments by Gayle Foster

WITH KEY INSIGHTS FROM HER FATHER, ADRIAN ROGERS

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.

Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
