Getting Through the Brass Ceiling

“Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

Romans 8:27

Ponder This

Have you ever tried to pray and it just seemed like the heavens are brass? It seems like your prayers hit the ceiling and bounce back off; you just can’t seem to get through. In that moment, God may seem thousands of light-years away. But the Bible teaches that it is the Holy Spirit who ushers us into the throne room. In Ephesians 2:18, Paul wrote, “For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.” When Paul said through Him, he was referring to Jesus. We pray to the Father through the Son in the Spirit. No matter how we may feel in the moment, we can have confidence that we do have access to God because of what Jesus has done. Through His Spirit, we can be sure that God hears our prayers. “For through Him,” Jesus, “we have access by one Spirit to the Father.”

  • When was a time you felt like your prayers “bounced off the ceiling”?
  • Why is it important to be able to remind yourself of the truth of God’s Word in such moments?

Practice This

Write out Ephesians 2:18 on an index card and place it somewhere you will see every day this week so you will be reminded that you have access to the Father, no matter how you feel in the moment.

FOR YOUR GIFT TO THE MINISTRY

Front Porch Moments by Gayle Foster

WITH KEY INSIGHTS FROM HER FATHER, ADRIAN ROGERS

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.

Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
