Daily Devotional
Are you the gnat or the bee?

BIBLE MEDITATION:

For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass. For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” James 1:23-25

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:

This guy is a man in a hurry (v. 23-24). He has a lot on his mind. He takes a quick glimpse in a mirror, then rushes on. If the Bible is like a mirror, then he’s getting just a glimpse in the Word but not really applying it to his life.

Most Christians I know today are this kind of Bible student—a gnat bouncing here and there—rather than a bee, diving in and staying long enough to extract the sweetness.

In contrast, the man in verse 25 gazes steadily into the Word. He delights in God’s Word, applies God’s Word, and cherishes God’s Word.

Are you like that? Or do you take a passing glance at the Word and move on to the next thing on your “to do” list?

ACTION POINT:

Which sounds more like you…the passing glance or the careful gaze?

Front Porch Moments by Gayle Foster

WITH KEY INSIGHTS FROM HER FATHER, ADRIAN ROGERS

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.

Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
