How Does God Lead You?

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Matthew 7:7-8

Ponder This

One night when I was down in Orlando, Florida, I tried to sleep, but I had a rock for a pillow. That is saying a lot because I am a sound sleeper. All night long, God just said, “Adrian, you’re going in the wrong direction—you’re trying to pour water uphill. You’re in the wrong place. You need to move out somewhere on the Interstate 40 corridor and see if there’s property out there.” So, I talked to some of the leadership of my church. I said, “Don’t think I’m crazy, but let me tell you something that God has put in my heart.” It had been so discouraging to see where the doors were shut. But God was giving us a different direction. In this new opportunity, God said, “Come on in.” God just opened the door.

That’s the way God leads. He’ll do it through His Word. He’ll do it when you pray and the Spirit of God speaks to your heart. He will do it through sanctified wisdom. God will renew your mind and use it and give you wisdom, and then God will open doors and God will shut doors. God doesn’t leave you wandering around like a ship without a rudder, a mast, a compass, or a sail, on a dark and stormy night. God will guide His people.

  • Have you ever gotten frustrated when God closed a door? What did you do?
  • How can you tell when God is opening a door?

Practice This

Consider what doors God may be opening or closing in your life right now. Pray for wisdom and discernment to follow His direction.

Front Porch Moments by Gayle Foster

WITH KEY INSIGHTS FROM HER FATHER, ADRIAN ROGERS

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.

Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
