Why Should You Be Quick to Obey Jesus?

“His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ Now there were set there six waterpots of stone, according to the manner of purification of the Jews, containing twenty or thirty gallons apiece. Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. And He said to them, ‘Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast.’ And they took it. When the master of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the feast called the bridegroom. And he said to him, ‘Every man at the beginning sets out the good wine, and when the guests have well drunk, then the inferior. You have kept the good wine until now!’ This beginning of signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory; and His disciples believed in Him.”

John 2:5-11

Ponder This

Why should you obey the Lord Jesus Christ? Why should you learn instant, glad, full, free obedience? One reason is for your good. If you want to be on the inside spiritually, become a servant. You see, the servants knew things the master of the feast did not know. Why did they know, and he did not? Because servants have a way of being on the inside. They were ready to listen and obey Jesus.

Why else do we obey? For His glory. Verse 11 teaches that when this miracle was done, Jesus’ glory was manifested. How was His glory manifested? A miracle was done. But notice, His glory was manifested when people obeyed Him. Obedience to Him gives Him glory. Jesus said in Luke 6:46, “But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?” What right do we have to say Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior if we do not obey Him? When we do obey Him, we give Him glory and that’s why we exist.

  • In what ways do you struggle to obey Christ?
  • What areas of your life bring God glory? What areas of your life do not bring Him glory? What needs to change?

Strive today to obey God in a difficult area and bring Him glory.

Front Porch Moments by Gayle Foster

WITH KEY INSIGHTS FROM HER FATHER, ADRIAN ROGERS

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.

Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
