BIBLE MEDITATION:
“Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth [credits, counts as] righteousness without works.” Romans 4:6
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHT:
The same year America declared its independence from England, Augustus Toplady, an Anglican minister, wrote a beloved hymn that has stood the test of time, “Rock of Ages.” It expresses our complete dependence upon God. The third verse says, “Nothing in my hand I bring, Simply to the cross I cling; Naked, come to Thee for dress; Helpless, look to Thee for grace; Foul, I to the fountain fly; Wash me, Savior, or I die.”
It’s hard sometimes to let go of our sins AND our righteous deeds in order to completely trust in God for our salvation.
Did you know there is something about human nature that doesn’t want to do this? We want to somehow “help” God by contributing our good deeds. And yet, “all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6b).
ACTION POINT:
Lay your knapsack of righteous works at His feet. Pray, “Only You, God, can make me righteous. Wash me, Savior, or I die.”
I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.
Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
