If you were walking through a jungle infested with ravenous lions, would you look where you walked? Would you be serious? That’s what Peter said: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” Satan is the bitterest enemy of God and His people.
If you do not understand how bitter your enemy is, you’re not going to be prepared to defend yourself. You see, the devil’s cleverest trick is to make you believe he doesn’t exist.
Today we laugh about the idea of a devil. We name football teams various kinds of devils. We name food “deviled ham,” “devil’s food cake.” We get the idea that the devil is a comic book character wearing long red underwear with horns and a forked tail, carrying a pitch fork to pierce someone from behind.
Let me set the record straight: the devil is behind all of that business to make us believe he doesn’t exist.
I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.
Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
