Marriage: The Supreme Commitment

"

Mark 10:7-8 says, “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife; And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.”

Marriage is the supreme commitment above any other earthly commitment. It is above our commitment to our parents. We are to honor our parents, but the Bible teaches that a man is to leave father and mother and cleave unto his wife. That means that the purse strings and the apron strings are to be cut.

Children are not the primary commitment. We are to love and care for our children, but they are not to get our supreme commitment. Mothers and fathers can make a tragic mistake when they pour all their devotion into their children at the expense of their spouses. You see, sooner or later, the children are going to leave home, and who is going to be left? Husband and wife.

Marriage is the supreme commitment above any other earthly commitment. That’s what the Bible teaches.

Front Porch Moments by Gayle Foster

WITH KEY INSIGHTS FROM HER FATHER, ADRIAN ROGERS

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.

Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
