Have you ever taken anything that did not belong to you? Whether it was a nickel off your mother’s dresser or whether you robbed a bank?
Have you ever told a lie? I don’t care whether it was a white lie, a black lie, or a Technicolor lie. It makes no difference. Have you ever told a lie?
Pastor, what’s your point? Well, the church is made up of liars and thieves. We don’t realize that what we do is not the problem. It is what we are that is the problem.
A man is not a liar because he tells lies. He tells lies because he is a liar. A man is not a thief because he steals. He steals because he is a thief. The problem is in the human heart!
We may be very sophisticated or smug about it, but I want to tell you, my precious friend, if you only knew the sin that lurks in the human heart. Jeremiah 17:9 says, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?”

I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.
Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
