When they built the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937, many of the workers were afraid that they might fall. In fact, 23 people on the first section of the bridge fell into the water and perished.
To guard against future fatalities, they built a safety net under the next section of the bridge. Only 10 fell, but every 10 that fell were caught and were saved. Their lives were not lost, but here is the important thing: with the safety net there, the workers finished the bridge 25% faster because they could concentrate on their work.
And so it is with the child of God. When he knows that his future is secure, he can concentrate on the present. Jesus said, “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father, which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Father's hand” (John 10:27-29).
I try to unplug each morning with Jesus with just my rocking chair, my Bible, and a pen.
Having a secret place is very important because I know that Jesus is always there waiting for me. I know where I can find Him! His presence is everywhere, but there are places where it is so thick you can cut it with a knife. You may not even have a front porch, but there is a secret place for you as well. God’s invitations are for anyone who will respond. There is no more important request than the one found in Psalm 27:8: “My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’”
