Let's Talk: Christmas Traditions

Countdown to Christmas

Advent calendars have their roots in the 19th century when German Protestants started taking creative steps to mark the days leading up to Christmas. Today you can find commercially produced advent calendars online. You can also make your own, or simply mark the days by lighting candles. Here are a few ideas you might want to consider:

Thoughts on Prophecy: One of our Love Worth Finding staff members created a Christmas advent tree for her children years ago that included symbols related to the prophecy of the Messiah and the fulfillment of that prophecy in Jesus Christ. You can find that study content reproduced in print form in LWF’s 25 Days of Anticipation, available as a free download or in a gift book. DOWNLOAD the STUDY at no cost or get the BOOK.

A Book A Day: If you have a box full of Christmas-themed children’s books, consider choosing one each day in December to read to your children. Be sure to include several books that tell the true story of Christmas. You might end the 25 days with a reading of Luke 2 in the Bible.

A Name A Day: If you enjoy the Names of God, you can use Love Worth Finding’s Names of God Christmas Ornaments in advent fashion, hanging a new ornament daily. These paper ornaments can be hung on a tree, clipped to a ribbon strung across a mantel or doorway, or placed anywhere in your home. A booklet accompanying the ornaments provides devotional thoughts for each day about how to pray to God using some of the names He gave us for Himself in Scripture.

Voices of Christmas: While there are not 25 of them, your family will be sure to enjoy LWF’s “Voices of Christmas” audio theater presentations. Find them on the MyLWF App, or access them on the LWF website.
