You grow close to God when you love Him with your whole self—spirit, soul, and body.
- Our spirits commune with God in prayer. Romans 8:16 says, “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.” Your spirit is the quality in human nature, and only in human nature, that enables you to know and worship God. Only Man has a spirit. Only Man can worship God, pray, and conceive eternity. When people who belong to Jesus pray, whether out loud or silently, God hears us. The more we communicate with Him, the closer we get to Him. 1 Thessalonians 5:17 says to “pray without ceasing.”
- Our souls meet God in His Word, the Bible. The Hebrew word for soul is nepes (neh-fesh), which speaks to the mind, will, and emotion. We connect our souls with God through the study of His Word. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, “Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman that needs not be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” As we read, meditate on, and memorize the Bible, He reveals more of Himself to us.
- We connect in our physical lives through acts of service, and in corporate worship and fellowship with other believers. Hebrews 10:24-25 says, “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting (encouraging) one another, and so much more as you see the Day approaching.” The “Day” represents the day Jesus comes back for those who are His. As we go to church to worship God and look for opportunities to serve our brothers and sisters in Christ, we connect physically with God and draw closer to Him in this personal relationship until He comes.
