In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, Paul wrote, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”
This verse disturbs many sincere believers. Sometimes it disturbs me! Is Paul telling us to give things even for the horrible and malevolent circumstances that befall us in this life? No, my friend, the Bible never tells us to give thanks for the terrible things that happen.
How then do we give thanks in everything, regardless of circumstances? We give thanks in the sense that we realize God is sovereign and that where He does not rule, He overrules. We can give thanks in all things, not necessarily for all things.
Remember, for the child of God, Romans 8:28 is still true. No matter what happens, God is working all things together for our good and His glory.
