How is marriage a symbol of God’s love for human beings? Biblical marriage, the union between one man and one woman, explains how two entities can come together and be joined as one. This type of joining is similar to the joining of a human being and God in what we call salvation. Ephesians 5:31 says, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” The bond that is created between a man and a woman in marriage is the bond of love: true, sacrificial, and selfless love. This kind of love cannot be compared to any other relationship within humanity. This oneness is indescribable! And so is the bond, the oneness, of the Father and the Son, as well as the oneness between the saved and the Savior. Jesus said it perfectly in His high priestly prayer written in the Gospel of John. He said:
“I do not pray for these alone, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word; that they may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And the glory which You gave Me I have given them that they may be one just as We are one: I in them, and You and Me; that they may be made perfect in one, and that the world may know that You have sent Me, and have loved them as You have loved Me” (John 17:20-23).
Marriage, the perfect portrait, is a beautiful picture of God’s love for us and the oneness that we can have in Him through Jesus Christ alone.
