However, the Bible does tell us to honor our mothers and speaks of mothers as being blessings. We are told this in Exodus 20:12 and in an almost identical verse in Deuteronomy 5:16 where Moses recalls the Ten Commandments, “Honor your father and mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you.” These verses make it clear that honoring mothers (and fathers) is not just an American or a cultural practice, but a Biblical command God has given to all. An example is found approximately five hundred years later in Proverbs 31. This chapter describes a wonderful portrait of a woman, a mother of virtue. Proverbs 31:28 says that her children rise and call her blessed and that her husband agrees and gives her praise. Verse 30 tells us that she should be praised if she follows the LORD faithfully. In fact, being a mom is a blessing from the LORD. Whether you are a biological mom, a stepmom, or an adopted mom, Psalm 127:3 says that children are blessings from God: “Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD [stepmom or adopted mom], the fruit of the womb is a reward [biological mom].” Therefore, it is clear that moms are blessings and celebrating them is consistent with what the Bible teaches.
