What is Evangelism?

You don’t have to be a scholar to share the Gospel of Christ! If you truly believe Jesus was born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died in your place to pay the penalty of your sin, and was raised on the third day, then you are commanded to share faith with others. How many times have you run up to someone or called someone to say, “I have good news!”? That’s what you have when you have Jesus! You have good news—the best news. The Greek word for evangelism is “euangelion,” and not only does it mean good news, but it is also translated in the New Testament 94 times as the word Gospel. The last words someone usually says are really important. The last words of Jesus before He ascended into Heaven commanded evangelism; to go and share the Gospel. We call these words the Great Commission: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). Here are three things to remember when sharing the Gospel: 1—Pray beforehand, asking God to give you the right attitude and the right words. 2—Share the Gospel lovingly. It’s a gift you offer, not something you can force. Don’t try to convince people with crafty or frightening speech. Anything you can talk someone into, someone else can talk them out of. 3—After sharing the truth, let the Holy Spirit do His job. Our only responsibility is obedience to share the Gospel. The results are between that person and the Holy Spirit. Your sharing pleases the Father, and that’s what matters most.
