What is the Great Commission?

The Great Commission, found in Matthew 28:18-20, provides Jesus’ last words to His disciples before leaving to return to His Father in Heaven. These verses are the mission mandate for every believer, not just for the early disciples. It began with them, but it is still our mission today, which is why the Great Commission is so important. Over the last two thousand years, the Great Commission has been the responsibility of every believer: “And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, ‘All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.’” Amen (Matthew 28:18-20). Every Christian is called to share the Gospel with the lost and to make disciples, helping them to grow into mature Christians so they can make disciples as well, expanding the kingdom of God throughout the world. So, what makes this commission great? The promise from Jesus is in it! He says, “...and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Jesus has not sent us out alone. He is with us, empowering us with His Holy Spirit to accomplish His mission in obedience to His command.
