Overcoming the Evil One

Matthew 6:13

Sermon Overview

Scripture Passage: Matthew 6:13

When we were saved, we were brought into a battle. It is not a playground or a church picnic, it is a fight to the finish with no holds barred against a sinister enemy. We are up against the demonized forces of Hell, but through Jesus Christ, we can overcome the evil one.

Matthew 6:13 says, “And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever…”

We must understand and recognize our enemy so we can be prepared for the battle.

Satan is a decided fact.

Never underestimate him or count him out. He would love nothing more than to convince us that he doesn’t exist. He is a person—once an angel, now the prince of Hell. His pride and belief that he could be more powerful than God led to his tragic demise. Still, he has great supernatural power and a new sinister purpose. His unholy ambition has been in revolt against Almighty God.

Adrian Rogers says, “He was banished from Heaven, no longer Lucifer, son of the morning. He became Satan, the father of the night.”

Satan has a plan, and his chief weapon is deception.

He is methodical, willing to wait for the perfect opportunity, letting us succeed so that we might further fall. He deceives people to deprave them; through that depravity, he then destroys and damns souls to Hell.

Satan is also a destructive force.

He uses demonic power such as the occult, sorcery, and false doctrine to warp our minds about religious things and confuse us—even possess us.

The worst part about it is how innocuously he’s presented his tricks. Horoscopes, entertainment and media, drug culture, even children’s games are packaged as innocent; in reality, they are tools in the enemy’s hands!

But we know, without a doubt, that Satan is also a defeated foe.

Adrian Rogers says, “The devil may be powerful, but God is all-powerful. The kingdom does not belong to Satan ultimately; it belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ.”

Knowing Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior is how we ultimately overcome the evil one.
